English Word Order: Put Words in the Right Place
· 3 min read · Updated

Subject–verb–object is a common English statement pattern. Other patterns use no object, a complement or a different order for questions.
Word Order is Very Important!
In English, the order of words matters a lot. You cannot put words anywhere you want. If you change the order, the sentence becomes wrong or confusing.
Think of it like a phone number. If you dial the numbers in the wrong order, you won't reach the right person! 📱
The Basic English Order
English follows this simple order:
Subject → Verb → Object
First comes WHO does it. Then comes WHAT they do. Then comes WHAT they do it to.
Wrong Order vs Right Order
Let's see some common mistakes:
❌ Eat I rice.

💡 Subject → Verb → Object
❌ Playing he cricket.

✅ He plays cricket.
💡 Subject → Verb → Object
❌ Watching they movie.

English word order helps communicate grammatical roles. Subject–verb–object is a common statement pattern, but it is not the only possible order.
Word Order with Time Words
Time words usually go at the beginning or end of a sentence:
❌ I yesterday went market.
✅ I went to the market yesterday.

In questions, the order changes a little bit. The helping word comes before the subject:

✅ What do you do?
💡 Question word → helping verb → subject
❌ He where lives?
✅ Where does he live?
💡 Question word → helping verb → subject
❌ They are going where?
