A, An and The: Exercises with Explained Answers

Published · Updated · 3 min read

An apple, a university building and a selected apple illustrate article choices.

Choose a or an for one nonspecific singular countable item, the when the listener can identify the intended reference, and no article for many general plural or uncountable meanings. The questions below give context so the answer does not depend on guessing.

A short rule check

Choose a or an from the sound immediately following it, not simply the first written letter. A university begins with a consonant sound; an hour begins with a vowel sound. If an adjective comes before the noun, listen to that adjective: an unusual idea, a useful idea.

We saw a bicycle outside. The bicycle had a red basket.

💡 First the bicycle is introduced; then the listener knows which one.

An honest answer is useful.

💡 Honest begins with a vowel sound because the h is silent.

I enjoy music.

💡 Music has a general uncountable meaning here.

The can refer to something known from the situation, even on its first mention. “Close the door” may be natural because both people can see the relevant door. Conversely, a first mention does not automatically require a or an if the reference is already clear.

How to use this practice

Write a, an, the or — for no article. Read the context before filling the gap. An article changes meaning; a sentence using a different article can be grammatical in a different situation. These questions specify the intended situation.

For general plural nouns, no article is often appropriate: “Bicycles are useful.” For a particular identified group, use the: “The bicycles outside our office are wet.” General uncountable nouns behave similarly: “Water is essential” versus “The water in this bottle is cold.”

Common mistakes to watch

❌ She gave me an useful tip.

✅ She gave me a useful tip.

Useful begins with the consonant sound /j/.

❌ He gave me an advice.

✅ He gave me some advice.

Advice is normally uncountable. A piece of advice is another option.

Is the always wrong on a first mention?

No. The listener may identify the reference from the situation or a description. First mention is only a useful starting pattern.

Can the appear before an uncountable noun?

Yes. Use it for an identified quantity or instance, such as the water in this bottle.
